Compliance Manager



Biogen is the UK’s leader in anaerobic digestion (AD) and one of the largest independent AD operators in the UK. Having recently expanded its food waste recycling network through acquisition, it has a combined network of thirteen AD plants and six composting sites located across England, Scotland and Wales that provide cost-effective, low carbon, food and organic waste management solutions. Working with supermarkets, the hospitality industry, food manufacturers and local authorities across the UK, the AD sites recycle over half a million tonnes of food waste each year.

Position: Regional Compliance Manager

Location: Milton Parc with regular travel (primarily the Southern Region)

Job Type: Full Time, Permanent

Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Salary: Circa £55k pa + car or car allowance + Bonus

About the role:


The Regional Compliance Manager will be responsible for providing detailed support and assistance to the Director of Compliance in all areas of compliance on the sites within the southern region. They will act as the Deputy to the Director of Compliance in their absence and provide support to the Regional Compliance Officers in other regions as required on technical regulatory matters.


They will lead in external inspections and visits from regulatory bodies, appointed consultants, for re-certification audits of the integrated management system (IMS, i.e. ISO and OHSAS accreditations),PAS 110 and PAS 100 and will be required to take the lead in drafting responses and identifying pragmatic and cost-effective solutions. The role will support the Director of Compliance and Health & Safety Manager with all matters relating to Health and Safety, including but not limited to, the development and review of relevant risk assessments, SOPs, training and driving safety improvements throughout the business.


The Compliance Manager will ensure that all annual reports and pollution inventory returns are completed for the sites as required by the permits, approvals and planning permissions and complete and submit permit variations and renewals to the EA, planning authorities and other relevant bodies as required.


This role requires regular travel as the company operates multiple sites, this role primarily covers the southern region, however attendance will be required at Head Office and travel across the company’s national network of AD and Compost Sites.


About you:


The successful candidate will have an academic background in Environmental Science or similar with vast experience in environmental field and previous experience of environmental permitting, including but not limited to, the completion and submission of environmental permitting applications to the Environment Agency. You will need a proven track record in the delivery of business objectives and quality, environmental and safety management systems.


Demonstrable experience of developing and improving Health, Safety & Environmental culture within a complex operational environment is essential however experience of the organic waste sector would also be desirable as would a NEBOSH Health & Safety Qualification, or equivalent.


Demonstrable experience of strong negotiation and influencing skills and of implementing and developing continuous improvement and corrective / preventative action techniques will be needed.


Experience of air dispersion modelling or GIS mapping would be beneficial but not essential as training will be provided to the successful candidate.


The candidate will show excellent verbal and written communication skills and able to communicate effectively at all levels along with being computer literate in all Microsoft packages.


Full UK Driving License and a willingness to regularly travel will be required for the role.
