Cut costs and generate revenue with on-site anaerobic digestion

UK AD & BIOGAS EXHIBITOR NEWS

Cutting energy costs, water use and their carbon footprint are priorities for most food and drink companies. British anaerobic digestion (AD) technology provider Clearfleau is helping such companies to respond by generating biogas from their processing residues. Its on-site AD process combines renewable energy production with reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Clearfleau’s innovative technology and client focused approach ensures these plants are revenue generative. They should provide a return on investment within five years, based on the following cost savings and sources of income:

  • Reduced treatment costs compared to aerobic treatment
  • Reduced costs for disposal of higher strength residues
  • Reduced energy costs, as fossil fuels are replaced by on-site renewable energy
  • Government incentives for renewable energy generation (FIT and / or RHI payments)

Clearfleau’s on-site digester can fully digest a range of liquid effluents containing high levels of sugars, oils and fats, as well as reject product or ingredients. The recently completed digestion plant at Nestlé’s confectionery site at Fawdon (near Newcastle) will be fully operational by July 2013. The biogas generated from digestion of trade effluent and a range of solid production residues will be providing power and heat to the site.

Clearfleau---IMG_2208In early 2013, Clearfleau completed an integrated on-site anaerobic digestion plant located at the Dailuaine whisky distillery in Speyside. At the 2013 British Renewable Energy Awards this bioenergy plant was highly commended in the project category. Another similar plant is being built on a whisky distillery during 2013/2014.

Clearfleau’s liquid digestion plants have the potential to assist the food and drink industry with a reduction in carbon emissions, as businesses face up to pressure from regulators, retailers and their customers. On-site digestion of processing residues is an opportunity to transform the way in which our food and drink products are produced, generating valuable renewable energy from what is often classified as waste.
