4R wins 5 year centrate contract at Poplars Anaerobic Digestion Plant in Cannock

ADBA Member News

The 4R Group subsidiary, 4Recycling Ltd of Stourton, Leeds has recently been awarded a five year contract by Biffa Waste Services Ltd to remove and recycle centrate from the Poplars Anaerobic Digestion Plant in Cannock, Staffordshire.

The plant which processes up to 120,000 tonnes of food waste per annum generates energy from the methane produced in the digestion process and the resultant Digestate is processed further producing both fibre and liquid centrate, both of which have excellent fertiliser value.

Working alongside local contractors and land owners 4Recycling handle up to 2,000 tonnes per week of these valuable chemical fertiliser replacement materials.

Landowners have clearly seen the benefits of using these materials and have allowed 4Recycling to build storage facilities on their farms. This allows the use of these materials on the crops at the optimum time in the growing season and reduces the need for concentrated vehicle movements from the Poplars site in the spring and early summer.

Along with this contract the 4R Group operate throughout the UK and Ireland recycling a wide range of “waste” materials to both agricultural land and brownfield sites such as Colliery spoil tips, China Clay mines and former landfill sites.

The team of Soil and Ecological Scientists within the 4R Environmental Consultants branch of the group provide internal and external advice on how to handle and recycle “waste” materials. Clients include waste producers, waste processors, local authorities and government. There are many experts in waste science and chemistry, there are few that can combine those skills with how to deliver an environmentally sound removal and recycling solution!

Mike Holt, Managing Director of the 4R Group says,

Our relationship with Biffa at Poplars goes back to before the plant was built and we’ve been able to provide long-term assistance to Biffa as the site has improved throughput volumes. We are establishing similar relationships across England and Wales with other Anaerobic Digestion plant operators. Backed by farmers and contractors local to the plants, we provide cost-effective recycling services supported by our leading technical expert team in the UK.
