ADBA partners with Pro2Pac to show sustainable solutions

Pro2Pac 2013 is set to provide food processing and packaging companies with the latest information on cutting-edge sustainability practices, as part of a brand new addition to the upcoming show.

The Sustainable Solutions Zone will act as a unique platform for visitors keen to discover the latest green and sustainable technologies and practices, including responsible recycling, waste reduction and renewable energy.

Following a new partnership with the Anaerobic Digestion & Biogas Association (ADBA), the dedicated zone will also ensure Pro2Pac visitors can learn about the benefits offered by anaerobic digestion (AD), an innovative practice that involves using biodegradable material to generate energy, cutting costs and carbon emissions. Leading food and drink manufacturers and retailers including Waitrose, Diageo, Sainsbury’s and Branston have already invested in the technology.

In-depth insights into how AD can be used and its benefits will be shared during the Pro2Pac Live seminar programme, while a meeting area will introduce food and drink manufacturers to AD suppliers.

Chris McCuin, Event Director, Pro2Pac 2013:

We’re very glad to be partnering with ADBA to ensure that Pro2Pac continues to provide visitors with the leading thinking in key industry issues.

The ability to produce renewable energy using waste resources is sure to prove extremely valuable to businesses seeking to boost efficiency and profitability, while also helping food manufacturers reduce their carbon footprint.

Almost any organic material, including leftover food, food processing waste, sewage and paper can be processed using AD, which uses natural bacteria to digest waste, producing a biogas that can generate electricity and heat or steam or, upgraded to biomethane, transport fuel, and a nutrient-rich biofertiliser which can replace carbon-intensive artificial fertilisers on farmland.

AD can reduce waste collection and processing costs, generate energy to meet on-site and transport needs, and increase revenue for companies that sell the energy they produce back to the national grid. It is the most environmentally friendly treatment for organic waste – it cuts the use of landfill sites and incineration and creates a ‘closed loop’ in food production by returning nutrients which would otherwise be wasted back to land.

Charlotte Morton, Chief Executive, ADBA:

With its track record in bringing companies from across the food and drink industry together, Pro2Pac is the perfect event for us to raise awareness of the benefits of AD, both for the planet and for business.

The food and drink industry is of vital importance for our members so we’re very pleased to be collaborating with Pro2Pac.

Pro2Pac, the UK’s only processing and packaging exhibition dedicated entirely to the food and drink sector, is co-located with IFE13, the UK’s largest food and drink trade event. The two shows will unite key decision makers from the entire food and drink industry, offering unbeatable networking opportunities.
