We are a group of dynamic and passionate people active within the circular economy industry, located in central London, just a stone’s throw from the lively Southbank and its foodie and cultural surroundings (currently working remotely). We are a small business with a big impact, working effectively to build key stakeholder relations and leverage the membership of the associations we manage.

Our mission is to ensure we can live on this planet sustainably. In order to achieve this, we need to effect change much faster than we are now. Focusing exclusively on industries that will help meet this objective, notably anaerobic digestion, biogas and cleantech, we provide management support to organisations that drive those game-changing sectors forward. 

We assist our clients in communicating their sector’s value, winning government support, accessing new markets, attracting investment and amplifying their R&D programs. We offer strategic advice, a full range of management services (policy, market analysis, membership, events, publications, sales, marketing, PR and finance) and practical support to enable our partners to be as effective as possible.

Our current clients are the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) and the World Biogas Association (WBA).  Additionally, We Are Orchard manages the annual cleantech investment event Cleantech Innovate.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a dedicated policy professional to lead on the policy strategy in our associations, the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) and the World Biogas Association (WBA), and help build momentum for the creation of a more circular economy, in the UK and globally, and drive our objective of cutting global GHG emissions by at least 10% by 2030.

You will have:

  • A 2:1 or above in a relevant analytical subject such as economics, social research, mathematics, engineering, science, geography or environmental sciences
  • At least four years of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrable commitment to sustainability, renewable energy and/or the green economy
  • Strong understanding of the policy development process
  • Effective at communicating to influence stakeholders using evidence and quick thinking to make a strong argument and tailor communications to a variety of stakeholders with different viewpoints
  • Analytical thinker with experience conducting quantitative and/or qualitative analysis
  • Evidenced experience of building strong stakeholder relations
  • Strong writing skills and experience delivering high-quality presentations
  • Effective people management skills and experience, and be a proactive and cooperative team member
  • Ability to work independently and drive results
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high quality work to deadline
  • Effective project management skills and highly organised
  • Ability to think strategically and set out a long-term work plan that is focused and deliverable
  • Knowledge of the waste, agriculture or energy sector, in particular anaerobic digestion and biogas (desirable)
  • Direct experience in developing evidence-based policy (desirable)
  • Master’s degree (desirable)


What you will be doing

You will be responsible for delivering the policy strategy for ADBA and the WBA, working closely with government and industry stakeholders; international organisations, including relevant arms of the UN; the boards of each organisation; and the organisations’ membership, to understand the existing policy environment, the position of the market, and how we can best communicate the importance of the circular economy and green gas for cutting emissions, alongside the views of our members, to those at the heart of policy making. You will be responsible for leading the Policy and External Affairs Team, delivering a range of high-quality publications on the latest policy and market information, setting event agendas, delivering presentations and holding meetings to engage with members and influence key stakeholders.

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • to lead the Policy and External Affairs team of six people to develop and deliver the lobbying strategies of ADBA and WBA, advocating for growth of the circular economy and green gas sectors;
  • to sit on the company’s Leadership Team of 4 people, reporting to the CEO;
  • to develop the key messages of the organisation and formulate company positions on key topics to inform both internal and external communications;
  • to development global policy recommendations and concepts to initiate fast-paced sector growth to support national policy teams as well as our own;
  • to arrange regular meetings with industry stakeholders, including government officials and IGOs, to build strong relationships, raise the profile of the circular economy and communicate the views of our members;
  • to develop the evidence base to inform policy making in the area of biogas and anaerobic digestion;
  • to write reports, briefing notes, presentations and blogs to communicate the importance of the circular economy and support for the biogas sector to external stakeholders and provide association members with the latest industry information;
  • to establish a community among members so we are on the pulse of the industry, knowing the latest issues and representing our members views, for example by arranging working groups; and,
  • to collaboratively set the content themes for industry events and communications, including the World Biogas Summit and the industry magazine, AD & Bioresources News, ensuring alignment across the different teams within the organisation, and with each organisation’s lobbying objectives, comms plan and industry strategies.
