ADBA praises global biogas industry commitment to deliver 12% reduction in global emissions by 2030

ADBA praises global biogas industry commitment to deliver 12% reduction in global greenhouse gases emissions by 2030

  • The World Biogas Association, of which ADBA is a founder member, issues Declaration to deliver 12% global GHG emissions reductions by 2030, signed by major industry players
  • It's the first time so many powerful organisations join forces to address climate change and demand that world governments unlock the potential of the biogas industry.
  • ADBA will continue to lobby the UK government to remove barriers to growth in support of the Declaration.

The UK Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) has praised its global counterpart the World Biogas Association (WBA) for securing the commitment of major corporate members to deliver a 12% reduction of global greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions by 2030 subject to world governments unlocking the industry's potential by removing all barriers to the industry's growth.

In the Biogas and Climate Change Commitment Declaration, 16 major biogas companies call on world governments to unlock the sector's considerable potential towards meeting their Paris Agreement targets. In return, they commit to putting their full human, financial and technological resources behind enabling the rapid expansion of biogas in all parts of the globe.  It is the first time that so many powerful biogas organisations join forces to both demand – and deliver – solutions to address climate change.

Charlotte Morton, Chief Executive of ADBA, said: “This level of collaboration within our industry is unprecedented and we are very proud to be a founding member of the WBA, who initiated and successfully delivered on this very significant initiative.  Now comes the hardest part to get world governments to act and make this all possible.  As a national association, we will be giving our full support to the WBA's efforts. We will lobby the UK government to remove barriers to growth of the UK’s AD industry, through policy, investment, infrastructure, research and innovation as well as public engagement.  As we choose a new government, we must work very hard to ensure that AD and biogas are strongly embedded in their strategy to deliver on their pledges for a sustainable and environmentally-responsible future.

The Declaration will be presented to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by WBA President David Newman at COP25 in Madrid this week.

  • Launched at COP22 in Marrakesh in 2016, the World Biogas Association is the global trade association for the biogas, landfill gas and anaerobic digestion (AD) sectors, dedicated to facilitating the adoption of biogas globally. It believes that the global adoption of biogas technologies is a multi-faceted opportunity to produce clean, renewable energy while resolving global issues related to development, public health and economic growth. www.worldbiogasassociation.org @wbatweets
  • The Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) is the trade association for the UK anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas industry.
  • ADBA’s vision is to see the full potential of the UK AD industry realised so it can help the UK achieve its emissions targets and other policy goals, creating a truly circular economy.
