Failures on climate targets show need for AD

ADBA PRESS RELEASE

Reacting to the publication today [30 June] of the 3rd Review from the Committee on Climate Change, ADBA Chief Executive Charlotte Morton said:

Despite all the talk from government, the Committee on Climate Change has shown that we’re moving no closer to meeting climate change targets – and last year we moved in the opposite direction.

The government should now focus on technologies which can be brought in quickly enough to make a difference by 2020. Anaerobic digestion needs to be a key part of this.

AD is a flexible technology which could provide 20% of Britain’s domestic gas, or generate electricity at just 11g of CO2 per kilowatt hour, compared to a CCC target of 50g, a current grid average of over 500g, and 305g from even the most cutting-edge incinerators.

Ministers need to seize the moment and give local authorities a clear steer that organic waste should be collected and prioritised for anaerobic digestion, which they’ve already recognised brings greater economic benefit than any other waste treatment.

The Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association will put this challenge to Lord Henley at the exhibition and conference, UK AD & Biogas 2011, at the NEC on 6-7 July.
