Funding competition from TSB and EPSRC

The Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) are launching a collaborative R&D funding competition on 20 January 2014.

The total award is £11m, with an expected project size between £200k to £2m, though projects outside of this range may be considered.

The aim of the call is to improve the balance of demand and supply. The UK will need a diverse mix of energy sources and systems in place by 2050 to ensure supplies stay affordable, resilient and flexible. It is likely that local energy systems will play an important role in this and technologies will therefore be required for generating, harvesting, distributing storing and using energy at these scales (clusters of buildings up to whole districts).

The call is looking for projects which develop ‘new products, services, and solutions in and across the energy, built environment, transport and digital sectors’.

This is a two-stage competition (stage one applicants submit an expression of interest which is assessed; stage two, applicants will be invited to submit an application) and proposals must be collaborative and business-led, more details available here.

  • Competition opens on 20 January 2014
  • Deadline for registration is noon 12 March 2014
  • Deadline for expressions of interest is at noon on 19 March

Two free briefing events for potential applicants will be held on 30 January 2014, SS Great Britain, Bristol and 18 February 2014, Churchill War Rooms, London.

Universities and research-and-technology organisations (including Catapults) are eligible partners though the portion of funding available to them in any one project will be capped at 30% of total project cost.
