“The food & drink industry: waking up to the value of food waste”

The AD industry has been one of the UK’s recent success stories, with a total of 335 AD facilities now delivering a combined electrical equivalent capacity of over 400 MW. Whilst this growth looks set to continue from the Plant Update on pp20-21, which gives an overview of upcoming projects, the availability of food waste will have a major impact on the industry's future, as explored in the main feature on AD and the food and drink sector on pp8-12. Securing the new government’s support for separate food waste collections will be vital if this growth is to continue.

Our guest Foreword by Forum for the Future’s Jonathon Porritt (p3) and my opinion piece on p4 both highlight the need for the new government to provide the correct support for AD. Crucial to this is an understanding that AD provides more than just renewable energy, with a range of benefits, including delivering baseload storable energy, reducing GHG emissions and recycling nutrients in organic matter which are essential to food production.

For these reasons, with just three months until the general election, I cannot emphasise enough how important it is for you to contact your local MP and make them aware of the benefits that AD can deliver (see p6 for how to do this). We have written to all our members asking them to invite their local MP to visit their site or company. We have also sent our members a pledge card for MPs to sign; providing a photo opportunity for members to publicise the visit, and helping us, as the industry trade body, to engage politicians on our primary objective of securing key manifesto pledges. For more information on the campaign, please contact our PR & Parliamentary Affairs Manager: derek.sivyer@adbioresources.org  / +44 (0)203 176 5441.

Also in this issue, don’t miss the opportunity to enter the UK AD & Biogas Industry Awards 2015 which will celebrate the most outstanding achievements in AD and take place on 1 July this year.
