Milestone of 10 million cubic meters of biomethane production reached

In April, Pentair Haffmans celebrated the milestone of reaching 10 million m3 of biomethane produced with the company’s technology.

Since the introduction of Pentair Haffmans’ biogas upgrading technique to the market in 2010, six
biogas upgrading projects have been commissioned in the Netherlands where the company is
headquartered. In 2013, the first two Pentair Haffmans biogas upgrading systems installed outside the
Netherlands will begin operation in Worcestershire, United Kingdom and Augsburg, Germany. In
addition, the largest Pentair Haffmans biogas upgrading plant to date, with a capacity of 1,050 Nm3/h of
biogas, will go live in 2014 in Alphen a/d Rijn, the Netherlands.

In October 2012 Pentair Haffmans’ biogas upgrading system won the Dutch Process Innovation Award.
The award honours the most innovative and forward-looking products and solutions in the Dutch process industry.

No methane slip; Option to recover food-grade CO2

Pentair Haffmans’ biogas upgrading technology offers two substantial advantages compared to
conventional systems. Biogas primarily consists of a mixture of methane (CH4) and CO2. With
conventional biogas upgrading techniques the CO2 by-product is expelled into the air containing a
considerable amount of CH4 that is lost. Pentair Haffmans’ system includes a unique second process
step, during which the CO2 gas is cleaned with an activated carbon filter and then liquefied. The liquid
CO2 flows through a stripper column where any remaining CH4 is removed. This second process step
completely eliminates the environmentally harmful methane slip. Optionally, the CO2 by-product can be
sold for use in a variety of applications.
