Welcome to the latest issue of AD & Biogas News: ‘Placing AD at the heart of the community’

Issue 23It is well known that engaging with the community is vital for a new AD plant at planning and operational stages. However, the level of that engagement could soon be increasing significantly following the publication of DECC’s Community Energy Strategy, and proposals for renewable energy installations costing above £2.5m to offer ‘shared ownership’ to their local community. The Secretary of State has made it clear that DECC would seek to legislate to give communities the right to ‘buy in’ to development if voluntary proposals are not forthcoming.

There are opportunities for developers here. “Community scale AD is proving a popular option. Communities see the benefits of locally-owned energy generation and appear keen to invest in renewable energy projects through local community share issues,” says David Rogers, Programme Area Manager for WRAP. Turn to pages 8-12 to learn more.

DECC has begun work on the full Feed in Tariff (FIT) review in preparation for the scheduled consultation next year. Our case will be strongest if we have good, documentary evidence so we are looking for as much support on this from our members as possible – this proved very helpful in our response to the recent RHI review. To find out more and how to get involved see p.4.

How well a digester performs can make a vast difference to revenue. Performance depends on a variety of factors including feed, temperature, mixing and operation. In this issue, Dorian Harrison, Technical Director for Monsal, discusses how to ensure efficient AD operation and looks at how ADBA members are driving up industry standards with new equipment. See pages 23-25.

The UK AD & Biogas exhibition 2014 was again a great success, reflecting the phenomenal growth of the industry this year, achieved in part through overcoming key challenges. Don’t miss our review and highlights of the trade show on pages 14-20, including the winners of the UK AD & Biogas Industry Awards.
