Welcome to the latest issue of AD & Bioresources News: ‘Raising the bar on safety and performance’

Upcoming election and raising the bar on safety and performance

With May’s election drawing ever closer we must ask ourselves what a new government is likely to mean for the industry and how we can best encourage policy which acknowledges the varied benefits of AD. Our Foreword on page 3 by Vilhelm Oberg, Director of Energy and Sustainability at Brevia Consulting, our political advisers, explores this issue, as does my opinion piece on page 4.

Decisions taken by the new government will make a huge difference to our future. It will be impossible to deliver green gas without a favourable legislative framework. For this reason, now is a crucial time to engage your future MPs – you are the best people to do this! I cannot stress enough how important it is to engage with the local candidates vying to represent your company or site(s) – not only is this an opportunity to raise awareness of AD at a political level through a site visit, but this could also be a fantastic PR opportunity for your business.

A well performing industry is crucial to continue to attract finance, ensure proportionate regulation and gain public and media support, so it is no surprise that as the industry grows, developers and operators are under pressure to continually improve operational standards. This issue of AD & Bioresources News has a strong focus on safety with the main feature on pages 8-12 looking at why it is time to raise overall industry standards. Our Technology Focus on Tanks on pages 18-19 is also safety-focused, looking at why tank safety is critical to a successful AD project, while Safety First on page 37 considers the measures which need to be taken to minimise risks to employees and visitors at AD plants.

Finally, UK AD and Biogas 2015, the UK’s only AD and biogas-specific show, is coming round the corner on 1-2 July at NEC Birmingham. Attracting 3,000 visitors from key sectors including farming, food and drink, waste management, transport and many more, UK AD & Biogas 2015 provides the perfect platform to network with the who’s who of the industry. There’s a lot to take advantage of at this free event, from a two day conference to one-to-one advice clinics, an R&D hub and the biomethane vehicle area – pages 14-15 provide a guide of what will be on offer. In addition, don’t miss your final opportunity to submit an entry for UK AD & Biogas Awards 2015 on page 17.
