MEMBER PRESS RELEASE – PPAYA Launches Open Renewable Energy Marketplace
Sustainable Energy First, Carter Jonas, infra3, Gen Capital, Locogen, Earthmill, Green Cat Renewables, and H2O Hydro join as founding partners; wider industry invited to participate.
PPAYA, providers behind one of the UK’s largest Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) auction and management services, today announced the launch of its open renewable energy marketplace. The launch draws on six years spent carefully building relationships with UK energy suppliers, negotiating bespoke commercial terms, and the tactical development and deployment of software. These capabilities are now brought together in a single, trusted marketplace that the wider industry can use to manage its own clients and portfolios.
Eight founding partners from across the UK renewable energy industry are uniting to create the UK’s largest renewable and consumer marketplace: Sustainable Energy First (SE First), Carter Jonas, infra3, Gen Capital, Locogen, Earthmill, Green Cat Renewables, and H2O Hydro.
Each brings its own portfolio of clients from the generation and consumption sectors. Together, they connect thousands of UK generators, corporate buyers, brokers, and service providers across their networks in one place, with a wide choice of products and prices provided by all partners, all transacted through the PPAYA marketplace.
Rather than compete for market share, PPAYA and all the founding partners are inviting brokers, consultants, and other energy service providers to join the marketplace. Whether they want to connect their buyers with generators within their own network, or find renewable generation for those buyers from other partners’ portfolios, everything can all be managed in one place for the first time.
About the Marketplace
Since launching in 2020, PPAYA has built a continuous auction platform designed to make PPAs faster, more transparent, and easier to compare, addressing the lengthy, opaque tendering processes that have traditionally characterised the market. The platform has facilitated over 1000 PPAs, 1.5GW of contracted renewable capacity and over 7TWh of electricity volume to date.
That foundation includes a proven auction and contract management system, pre-negotiated commercial terms, and connections to more than 30 UK energy suppliers, the kind of infrastructure that would otherwise take years for a new market entrant looking to buy and sell renewable energy to build alone.
Through PPAYA’s utility network and founding partners, the marketplace will be able to provide a broader range of products to the industry, such as enhanced PPA structures that unlock revenue opportunities beyond those typically available to generators acting independently. This includes direct access to corporate consumers, allowing PPAYA to structure agreements and negotiate prices between UK-based generators and corporate buyers, reducing fees for all parties involved.
Together, PPAYA and the founding partners’ networks include more than 2,000 generating sites and assets, producing around 3.1 TWh of renewable electricity a year. The founding partners’ corporate clients consume around 5 TWh, about 3.5% of UK business power demand. With renewables now supplying over half of the UK’s electricity, the marketplace gives small and large generators alike access to the same range of buyers and products.
The marketplace makes this infrastructure available to the wider industry. It has been designed as an open, single home for the market from the outset, with a standing invitation for other organisations to become part of it. PPAYA’s aim for the marketplace is for it to become the first stop for the UK renewable energy industry: the place the whole market checks before going anywhere else.
Founding Partners
The founding partners are central to the marketplace, and they have chosen PPAYA as their technology partner to deliver it. Each gains access to PPAYA’s existing platform, product range, and multi-supplier relationships.
- Sustainable Energy First: an energy consultancy connecting UK corporate energy buyers, including members of its Sustainable Energy Consortium (SEC), with renewable generation opportunities through the largest collection of license exempt supply generators in the world.
Through the marketplace, Sustainable Energy First’s corporate buyers gain access to PPAYA’s generation base across multiple technologies, while generators gain a new route to Sustainable Energy First’s portfolio of commercial and industrial offtakers. That reach extends to the SEC too: member businesses gain enhanced renewable energy procurement opportunities through the marketplace, through simplifying the route, risk, and cost for offtakers to buy green energy directly from source, and helping them strengthen their sustainability credentials and progress towards net-zero commitments.
- Carter Jonas: a multi-disciplinary property consultancy whose Energy team provides a broad range of services across the energy sector, including advising renewable energy asset owners on Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), supporting energy procurement and contract renewals, and delivering strategic consultancy to landowners, developers, investors and energy consumers throughout the UK.
- infra3: specialists in infrastructure consultancy, infra3 was formed from over 25 years of management, engineering and leadership experience. Services to investment and asset companies stretch across the Telecoms, Utilities and Energy sectors.
- Gen Capital: an energy advisory and asset owner, specialising in equity and debt raising.
- Locogen: Locogen is a leading renewable energy consultancy in the UK, providing end-to-end services for onshore renewable energy projects, supporting our clients across advisory, due diligence, planning and environment, engineering and construction, and asset management.
- Earthmill: a wind turbine specialist providing operations and maintenance, repowering, condition monitoring and upgrades for agricultural wind turbines, with more than 800 turbines under management across the UK.
- Green Cat Renewables: a Scottish renewable energy consultancy providing engineering, geotechnical, environmental, due diligence and asset management services for wind, solar, hydro and storage projects, working with landowners, developers, investors and lenders across the UK.
- H2O Hydro: hydro specialists that designs, builds and maintains hydroelectric schemes across Scotland and the UK, and sells the power they generate through PPAs and other routes.

Comments
Kristina Rabecaite, CEO of PPAYA, said:
“Generation and consumption have always sat on opposite sides of the market. For the first time, they can meet in a single marketplace, one we’ve built over the past six years and are now opening up to the whole industry.
Partnering with such valued and reputable organisations allows us to extend the reach of our marketplace while creating new opportunities for generators and corporate buyers alike. Together, we’re establishing a more connected renewable energy ecosystem.”
Anthony Mayall, Managing Director at Sustainable Energy First, said:
“This partnership represents an exciting step forward in the evolution of renewable energy procurement. By combining our market expertise, customer network, and the growing influence of the Sustainable Energy Consortium with PPAYA’s innovative technology, we can create greater opportunities for both generators and businesses. Together, we’re helping to build a more efficient and transparent marketplace that accelerates the adoption of renewable energy across the UK while delivering additional value to our SEC members.
Linking UK generators to UK businesses is a key part of our strategy to de-risk and de-carbonise the 10TWh of electricity that we manage on behalf of our clients. According to Bloomberg, SEC is the largest renewable energy consortium in the world and has accelerated our decarbonisation goal significantly.”
Chris Rodgers, Director at Gen Capital, said:
“Funding a renewable asset depends on a sound route to market. Without one, the asset is not financially viable, and we would not be able to lend against it. Access to corporate PPAs and Licence Exempt Supply through the marketplace allows us to maximise the return on our investments.”
Andrew Lyle, CEO of Locogen, said:
“Innovation is at the heart of what we do at Locogen. We strive to offer the highest level of service to our clients, and through the use of PPAYA, we will be able to offer greater access to the market, maximising the value of our clients’ portfolios and streamlining our processes.”
Jim Sherwin, Head of Sales at Earthmill, said:
“The farmers and landowners we work with depend on their turbines for income every day, and how they sell the power matters as much as keeping the turbine running. PPAYA’s marketplace gives those owners access to a wider range of suppliers and products in one place – we look forward to helping more turbine owners find the right route to market.”
Mel Owen, Head of Asset Management, Green Cat Renewables, said:
“The marketplace gives the landowners, developers and investors we work with a clearer view of their options, with a wider range of suppliers and products in one place. We’re a big believer and driver for innovation, and we’re pleased to be a founding partner in an open marketplace that shares that aim.”
Harry Gourlay, Director at H2O Hydro, said:
“We’re pleased to be a founding partner and to help offer more routes and products for our hydroelectric generators through a marketplace that works for everyone in it. Whatever the size of the asset, the marketplace gives access to the same flexible products as larger assets across the country, so hydro is no longer limited to fixed price products and can manage risk through a wider range of PPA structures.“
