When Anaerobic Digestion is under heat: Case Study of the June-July 2026 heat episode

With a new heatwave currently looming over the UK, the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) wants to have a look at the impact of such prolonged heat episodes on the AD industry and the overall food system, let’s dive into the most recent high heat event, just a month ago, and its consequences on us.

Heat will become an operating condition, not an anomaly 

The first half of the year 2026 has seen a series of extreme heat events, with the UK experiencing its hottest June on record (Met Office, 2026a). For the UK anaerobic digestion (AD) industry, extreme heat seems to no longer be a rare disruption to be forgotten, but a recurring operating condition that plants must be prepared for and learn how to withstand. 

In late June, the Met Office issued Red Extreme Heat Warnings on three consecutive days, the first time since the current warning system began (Met Office, 2026b); temperatures reached at least 39°C, likely breaking the UK’s June record (Met Office, 2026a). This followed a record-breaking heat episode in May, giving two record heatwaves within weeks (Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), 2026). That clustering matters more than any single peak: Met Office projections indicate hot spells will become more frequent, especially across south-east England, driven by human-induced climate change (Met Office, 2026b). The usual seasonal pattern and expectations built on a temperate UK climate no longer hold and will greatly affect the AD industry.  

The issue is also multi-faceted: first, the exposure runs through the food system, heat disrupts food from field to shelf, and much of what is lost flows to plants as feedstock. Then, the same conditions that generate a surge in feedstock also raise digester temperatures, stress the biology and heighten risks to staff; the extra material arrives precisely when a plant is least able to absorb it. 

This is a shift that operators and policymakers must absorb, and it is the reason resilience planning can no longer be seasonal. The rest of this article will examine how these pressures played out in mid-2026, where the operational risks fall, and what can be done to build resilience before the next heatwave, not during it. 

June-July 2026 food waste oversupply case study 

The June-July 2026 heatwave completely disrupted the food system and supply chains, turning the AD industry from a side-player of the waste hierarchy into the food system’s emergency release valve; and exposed how little slack it holds. 

The first instance of failure came through retail refrigeration: commercial fridges are typically designed to hold temperature only up to around 32°C (BBC News, 2026), and as late-June temperatures pushed past that ceiling, cooling systems failed across Sainsbury’s, M&S, Morrisons and Tesco stores in at least six regions, from Manchester to Swindon (Grocery Gazette, 2026). According to the Food Standards Agency rules, chilled food reaching temperatures above 8°C must be withdrawn from sale, and under that strain retailers had to shut down sections of their operations to keep others running (Grocery Gazette, 2026; BBC News, 2026). Spoiled and precautionary stock was pulled out in bulk, leaving that massive stream of packaged, perishable waste with only one compliant destination: AD. 

Unfortunately, the surge was not confined to retail; the Environment Agency (EA) described “exceptional” freezer failures across supermarkets (Letsrecycle.com, 2026), while Greenpeace’s YouGov polling found that 22% of UK adults had thrown away food spoiled by the heat (The Independent, 2026; Letsrecycle.com, 2026).  

Retail and household spikes arrived within the same short window and fell on a sector already running with little headroom. The recently deployed mandatory household collections under Simpler Recycling, which went live in England in March 2026, had already absorbed much of the available slack and in many areas was still expanding, with Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) alone adding over 100,000 households from 6 April 2026 (BCP Council, 2026). The UK’s 753 AD plants offer roughly 5.8 million tonnes of food waste treatment capacity (ADBA), yet gate fees had reached £15 per tonne by mid-July, a 75% rise since January (Letsrecycle.com, 2026). 

With facilities approaching their limits, the EA contacted operators to establish which sites were at capacity and which had room, collating the data to redirect tonnage (Letsrecycle.com, 2026). The EA stressed that the extra volume was only a small share of annual arisings (Letsrecycle.com, 2026), yet that marginal surge was enough to trigger a national capacity scramble; a telling sign of how thin the sector’s buffer had become. 

This episode exposed a structural mismatch and unpreparedness. AD now absorbs the food system’s heat failures at national scale, yet its capacity is calibrated to average conditions, not to the simultaneous, weather-driven spikes that are becoming routine. The surge was modest; the disruption was not.  

Not just an operational challenge; the political and social stresses 

The June surge was managed, but it is the way it was managed that should concern policymakers more than the volume itself. Faced with plants nearing capacity, the EA resorted to telephoning operators to find spare headroom and redirect tonnage (Letsrecycle.com, 2026) — an effective response, but an improvised response nonetheless, and a sign that the food system’s principal waste outlet had no structural buffer for conditions that likely will become routine. If it continues to be treated as a one-off emergency rather than a standing operating condition, each heatwave will demand the same scramble. 

That fragility is not incidental; it is baked into the sector’s trajectory. A July 2026 briefing from the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) concludes that the UK AD sector must expand roughly tenfold by 2050 to meet biomethane demand (POST, 2026). At the same time, the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee is questioning whether plant capacity is keeping pace with the household food waste now collected weekly by law in England (POST, 2026). The sector is being asked to grow at that scale, while absorbing weather-driven spikes on top of a rising baseline, facing a widening gap between what it is expected to handle and what it is built for. 

This heat episode exposed the contradiction in how AD is positioned within the food-waste hierarchy; AD counts as recycling, which is better than landfill or incineration, but is considered below the redistribution of edible surplus (POST, 2026). Meanwhile, charities and the StopTheBiomethaneRush coalition argue that subsidising AD can incentivise waste generation and divert edible food from people to digesters (POST, 2026). But when a heatwave led to the collapse of the food supply chain to the extent it had been witnessed, the AD sector became the very last ethical and sustainable option for that waste, which would otherwise have gone to landfill or incineration. 

What’s next?

These challenges highlighted above sit inside a wider adaptation deficit that the UK itself acknowledges. The Climate Change Committee (CCC) finds the UK dangerously underprepared for the warming now expected by 2050 and judges the national adaptation framework “not fit for purpose” (CCC, 2026). The food system feeding AD illustrates the gap: around half of the UK food supply depends on a cold chain whose facilities are, in roughly half of the cases, more than twenty years old (ECIU, 2026). The heat that breaks that refrigeration converts directly into surges at the digester gate. The costs are not only economic either, but the same heat also disrupts sleep and workplace productivity across the population (The Independent, 2026) and AD’s own risks of failure (odour and fugitive emissions) challenge communities already under strain, putting the sector’s social perception at stake. 

If the risks are structural, the response must be too, and it begins with capacity planning that treats heat as a design condition rather than a surprise. Government should assess required AD capacity against mandated collection volumes and climate-driven peaks and replace ad-hoc canvassing with pre-agreed surge-diversion protocols between operators and regulators. That resilience needs anchoring in the national adaptation programme, with the measurable targets the CCC demands and cold-chain heat risk explicitly included (CCC, 2026; Climate Sense and Fox, 2026). Subsidy and incentive schemes should also align with the overall hierarchy of the food waste prevention and recycling system so that the expansion of the AD sector does not undercut prevention and redistribution. And that expansion should carry the tighter methane oversight the Lords committee has urged, protecting both climate goals and public consent (POST, 2026). Resilience, in short, is as much a policy choice as an engineering one.
