ADBA Northern Ireland Conference 2021

7th September, 2021 9:30am – 1:00pm, Online

Add to calendar

The Northern Ireland Assembly is currently engaged in a wholesale policy review to develop a Net Zero roadmap, addressing energy, agriculture and transport.

Proposals currently before the Assembly seek to achieve Net Zero by 2045.

With the agri-food sector dominating the local economy, Northern Ireland is blessed with enviable supplies of feedstock from the agri-food and waste sectors. The treatment of these wastes via AD has been earmarked to play an integral role in the delivery of Net Zero – avoiding emissions from waste mismanagement and generating valuable bioresources (biomethane, biofertiliser and bio-CO2).

Biomethane is highlighted “as an important feature of our future energy needs” alongside calls to maximise injection into the grid and facilitate compressed natural gas refuelling stations on the gas network.

Currently Granville Eco Park is the only AD facility producing biomethane in the province, the other 75 produce renewable electricity via a CHP.

Given that the province’s nature hampers plans to develop carbon capture and storage it opens the door to carbon capture and utilisation from AD.

ADBA’s Northern Ireland Conference will present the inside track on the role AD and biogas has to play its decarbonisation strategy.

Session 1 – Northern Ireland market overview

Chair:

Christopher Osborne, Senior Policy Officer, Ulster Farmers’ Union

Christopher will present an overview of current Net Zero thinking within the NI assembly/government; what are the key targets and priorities between now and 2050?

Nick Primmer, ADBA

Presents an overview of Northern Ireland’s current biogas market, using data from ADBA’s UK database; modelling will also explore NI’s energy and decarbonisation potential if all organic wastes are diverted to AD.

David McKee, Chief Technical Officer, Granville Ecopark

Why is there only one AD plant in NI upgrading biogas to biomethane? And how can policy and market factors drive growth? David will present the value proposition of biomethane (including RTFO update) and how Granville Ecopark, among the first AD facilities in the UK to be awarded AD Certification, do it.

Eric Cosgrove, Director of Engineering & Sustainability, Firmus Energy

Eric will discuss the role of NI’s gas grid in the decarbonisation of heat and transport, identifying the current barriers to biomethane use and its future potential in delivering net zero.

Panellists from the NI Gas Grid and wastewater industry, and off takers in the logistics sector, tbc.

Session 2 – Unlocking biogas potential

Chair: Thomas Cromie, Consultant, agriAD

This session identifies some of the best opportunities for biogas growth in NI – agriculture, food manufacture, and wastewater treatment – and considers the key drivers for tapping into this potential. Digestate is a critical issue, with NI facing the twin challenges of ammonia emissions and nitrogen and phosphorous vulnerability.

Jon Shepherd, Key Accounts Manager, DPS

John Booth, Sales Development, Wangen Pumpen

Jon Shepherd and John Booth will present an overview of their pump technology, detailing its benefits and ability to improve plant performance.

Julian Beatty, Managing Director, Nova Q Ltd

Nova Q – How novel biogas upgrade technologies can help to bring agriculture beyond net zero.

Pawel Kisielewski, CCm Technologies

Presents their company’s innovative technology, that uses carbon captured from the biogas upgrading process to create a consistent pelletised fertiliser that can be tweaked to meet the user’s needs.

Nick Johnn, Aardvark / ADCS

Presents the ADCS overview and potential benefits, including optimising plant performance and supporting the economic model of an AD plant

Grant Aldridge, Head of R&D Tax, Available Grants

Presents the value of R&D credits available to anyone exploring ways to improve plant performance

Panellists from among operators in the agriculture, food manufacture and wastewater sectors, tbc.
