The Northern Ireland National Assembly’s biomethane strategy will be the focus of the ADBA Northern Ireland Conference 2024. With the current round of stakeholder consultation ending in August, the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) is providing this conference as the first opportunity for biogas stakeholders to gain insight into the emerging framework to scale up the industry.
In launching the consultation, the NI Assembly recognised the energy and environmental benefits of scaling up the sector, to address nutrient pollution and protect the future of farming and tourism, increase energy security and meet the province’s net zero targets. ADBA’s annual conference will feature insights from top policymakers, industry experts and thought leaders, alongside a host of ‘Best Available Techniques’ exhibitors.
The conference, chaired by ADBA Chair Chris Huhne, former Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, will open with a ministerial update and consider the policy and finance mechanisms that can scale up the industry, and cross-border partnerships to develop a green gas network. Key sessions include health and safety updates from the ADBA Technical Support Team, and insights from the first biomethane injection into the gas grid.
Included in the ticket price: presentations, networking, lunch and a small exhibition of technology and services as well as discounts to local hotels and tourist attractions. Find out more here.

Background
Anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas represents an unrivalled green growth opportunity for Northern Ireland, consistent with both its Energy Strategy and Green Growth Strategy. It will enhance rural and national productivity, employment and prosperity. It will also have the ancillary benefits of mitigating the significant nutrient management issues the new executive is trying to tackle, decarbonising the agriculture and other high-emitting sectors of the Northern Irish economy and helping Northern Ireland to bolster its energy security and reach net zero.
In addition to all the above and taking into account that Northern Ireland has enough feedstock to create adequate green gas to account for 82% of Northern Ireland’s natural gas usage, it is, in the words of the UK Climate Change Committee, the “no-regrets option” for Northern Ireland.
