ADBA at ESS/EFD EXPO 2024: The Extended Case for Anaerobic Digestion

ADBA at ESS/EFD EXPO 2024: The Extended Case for Anaerobic Digestion

On 12 September 2024, ADBA hosted a session at the ESS/EFD EXPO as part of the Energy, Fuels and Decarbonisation Keynote conference.

Entitled “An extended case for Anaerobic Digestion: biomethane production is worth more than just gas“, the panel discussion moderated by ADBA Chair Chris Huhne brought together industry experts to explore the multifaceted value of anaerobic digestion (AD) beyond its well-known role in biomethane production.

The session featured insightful presentations from Dr David Kaner, Chief Executive of AAL Clean Farming and Chair of ADBA’s Small On-Farm AD Working Group, David Hurren, Business Consultant and ADBA Board Member, and Mark Richmond, Technical Director, WRM each contributing their unique perspectives to build a robust case for AD’s broader applications and benefits.

The speakers started by underscoring AD’s pivotal role in the UK’s renewable energy landscape, waste management strategies, and decarbonisation efforts. They emphasised that, while biomethane production is a significant output, AD’s value extends far beyond this singlular product.

David Hurren and panelists

David Hurren’s presentation highlighted the broader implications of AD adoption. He presented compelling data on AD’s carbon reduction potential, and emphasized its critical role in helping the UK meet its ambitious net-zero targets and contribute to global climate commitments. He also pointed out that AD’s value reaches beyond energy production, extending to substantial environmental benefits.

David Kaner

Dr David Kaner explored the transformative potential of small-scale on-farm AD. His presentation showcased how these systems are revolutionising agricultural practices by effectively turning environmental challenges into valuable resources. Dr. Kaner’s insights resonated particularly well with attendees from the farming sector, demonstrating AD’s potential to support sustainable agriculture.

Mark Richmond

Mark Richmond rounded off the presentations by discussing AD’s role in the circular economy. He explained how AD supports resource recovery and promotes sustainable waste management practices. His exploration of industry standards for digestate quality highlighted AD’s contribution to both the energy and agriculture sectors, further reinforcing its value beyond gas production.

ADBA Chair Chris Huhne takes questions

ADBA extends its heartfelt thanks to Chris Huhne for his expert moderation, and to Dr David Kaner, David Hurren, and Mark Richmond for their invaluable insights. Their contributions have undoubtedly advanced the conversation on AD in the UK, reinforcing the case for its wider adoption and development.

This keynote session at ESS EXPO 2024 reaffirmed ADBA’s commitment to campaigning for the AD industry. Looking ahead, ADBA remains dedicated to promoting widespread adoption of AD and supporting the industry’s growth, recognising its value far beyond gas production.

Stay tuned for further updates as ADBA continues its mission to highlight the crucial role of AD in building a sustainable, low-carbon future for the UK.
