MEMBER PRESS RELEASE – Carbogenics Secures Nearly Half a Million Pounds to Drive Global Growth
University of Edinburgh spinout Carbogenics, a leading innovator in sustainable biochar technology, is thrilled to announce the successful close of its latest funding round, securing just under half a million pounds. This significant milestone reflects the confidence of both existing and new investors in Carbogenics’ mission to revolutionise sustainable solutions and expand its global footprint.
The company turns difficult-to-recycle secondary-biomass – which would otherwise go to landfills or be sent for incineration – into a product called CreChar®. This is a carbon-rich, porous material that should help stabilise the performance of anaerobic digestion plants.
The funding was achieved through contributions from long-standing investors, including Green Angel Ventures, as well as new investment from the United States led by our new venture partners Kaplak Ventures. This strategic trans-atlantic approach underscores the growing global interest in sustainability and biochar’s potential to combat climate change.
“We are delighted with the response to this investment round for Carbogenics- a company with an incredibly important and exciting future, embracing circularity principles to utilise ‘waste’ biomass to enhance green biogas production and carbon sequestration.” Cam Ross, CEO, GAV
“We are excited to be supporting the growth of Carbogenics and impressed by the vision, product and team. Kaplak Ventures see a big future for Carbogenics in Europe and North America and will be playing a role in taking its CreChar product to market and supporting its future investment needs in 2025.” Rahoul Mehra, Partner – Kaplak Ventures
While these funds will fuel key growth initiatives, such as new product development, expanding our sales traction and our operations into Europe and North America, Carbogenics remains firmly committed to its UK operations having opened its first post-processing facility in Glenrothes Scotland earlier in 2024. This funding strengthens the ability to innovate and deliver solutions both at home and abroad.
Chief executive Ed Craig commented “I am incredibly proud of the team for the progress we have made in 2024 across the board and 2025 looks very much like the biggest year for Carbogenics. In a world that more than ever needs common sense solutions to complex challenges, Carbogenics provides a clear pathway, one increasingly recognised by our investors and clients alike.”
This investment represents not just a financial boost, but a strategic shift in expanding Carbogenics’ presence in the North American market, leveraging the abundant resources and opportunities available across the Atlantic. Simultaneously, the company is advancing its European operations to meet growing demand and form strategic partnerships.
The funding will enable Carbogenics to accelerate the uptake of its ground-breaking CreChar® product, whilst progressing the commercialisation of new products to market such as FilaChar® designed for the waste-water industry.
