New PAS110 Digestate Testing Service: Simplifying Certification for AD Operators

This summer, The James Hutton Institute is launching a new PAS110 digestate testing service to make it easier, faster and more credible for anaerobic digestion (AD) operators in Scotland and northern England to prove their digestate meets UK quality standards before land application.

PAS110 is the recognised UK standard that determines when digestate stops being waste and becomes a certified product suitable for agricultural use. Certification demonstrates compliance, nutrient value and builds trust with farmers and regulators.

The service combines laboratory testing and field trials under one roof, offering locally accessible testing and clear certification pathways. This helps AD operators confidently turn biowaste into a verified product that farmers want to use, supporting both environmental goals and market confidence.

With Scotland’s AD sector increasingly recognised for its role in net-zero targets, rural jobs, and sustainable waste management, this new service is a practical step toward a stronger, more credible circular economy.

Meet The James Hutton Institute at the ADBA Scottish Conference to find out more.

“If you’re working in AD, farming or renewables in Scotland, it’s well worth showing up. You’ll hear what’s actually happening on the ground, meet the people driving it forward and get a clear sense of where the biogas sector is heading next.” Jan Hewitt, Marketing Manager, Hutton Scientific Services.

Vaste Launches Platform to Streamline DWTS Compliance and Feedstock Management

Vaste is introducing a new platform to help anaerobic digestion (AD) operators prepare for the October 2026 Digital Waste Tracking System (DWTS) mandate, while also strengthening and de-risking feedstock supply chains. The platform automates DWTS compliance, improves feedstock procurement and logistics, and generates actionable data for both commercial and regulatory decisions.

DWTS doesn’t have to be just another compliance burden. By turning waste tracking into a data and optimisation layer, AD operators can solve four major challenges:

  1. DWTS Compliance – API-driven automation for waste code selection and seamless DEFRA submissions.

  2. Feedstock Procurement – Access verified suppliers across seven biomass categories with real-time pricing and quality data.

  3. Logistics Integration – Coordinate collection, transport, and delivery efficiently.

  4. Audit-Ready Documentation – Digital waste transfer notes, carbon tracking, and regulatory reporting.

With policy increasingly data-driven, many AD plants still rely on spreadsheets and disconnected systems. Those that digitise now will secure long-term feedstock contracts, respond faster to regulation, and clearly demonstrate the carbon and circular economy value of their operations.

Meet Vaste Ltd at the ADBA Scottish Conference to find out more.

“The ADBA Scottish Conference is one of the few places where policy makers, regulators, local authorities, AD operators and technology providers are all in the same room discussing very practical next steps for the sector.” Evans Chelal, Founder and CEO, Vaste Technologies Ltd.

CreChar: Boosting Anaerobic Digestion Performance with Biochar

CreChar, the biochar solution from Carbogenics, helps anaerobic digestion (AD) operators increase methane yield, stabilise biological performance and reduce operational risk.

By enhancing the biological resilience of digesters, CreChar allows plants to process more challenging feedstocks while maintaining consistent gas output and quality. In an industry facing tighter margins and increasingly variable feedstock, stability and performance are more important than ever.

With CreChar, AD operators can optimise their processes, improve operational reliability and maximise the value of their biogas production — turning feedstock variability into a manageable factor rather than a risk.

Find out more at the ADBA Scottish Conference on Wednesday, 4 March.

“The ADBA Scottish Conference is a fantastic meeting point for the entire Scottish AD industry to come together, network and learn from each other. We certainly enjoy coming for a catch-up and to keep up with the latest policy and news within the industry.” Alana McSkimming, Marketing Executive, Carbogenics.

ClintyBio: Advancing Anaerobic Digestion with Technology and Expertise

The biogas sector continues to grow, but economic pressures and evolving policy frameworks mean that anaerobic digestion (AD) plants must adopt new technologies to remain competitive and profitable.

ClintyBio offers innovative technology solutions and biological consulting designed to improve the AD process by increasing gas yields, enhancing operational stability, and reducing CAPEX through optimised tank volumes. By enabling smarter digester design and process efficiency, ClintyBio helps operators get more output from less infrastructure.

Recent UK industry developments, including the commissioning of the first unsubsidised gas-to-grid biomethane plant, demonstrate that commercial viability without direct tariffs is achievable. Success in this new landscape depends on intelligent integration of advanced site design, feedstock valorisation, and operational optimisation — rather than relying solely on subsidy support.

ClintyBio’s technology and expertise equip AD operators to thrive in this changing market, delivering higher performance, lower costs, and greater resilience.

“The conference is a hub for meeting people and organisations with a huge range of perspectives and approaches to Biogas and a great forum to hear about the latest advancements and regulatory news.” Darragh Buckley, Bioprocess Engineer, ClintyBio.
