Iran War Special – ADBA’s response to the energy crisis

Building on from the last week’s ADBA and Energy Crisis special newsletter for our members, this page brings together our latest work on these efforts, along with resources to support members who may be directly affected by the current situation. The disruption to global energy supplies has once again underlined the UK’s vulnerability and the urgent need to accelerate homegrown green energy solutions.
ADBA is actively engaging with policymakers, media, and industry partners to ensure that anaerobic digestion and biogas are recognised as essential to strengthening the UK’s energy and food security. Here, members can follow our latest actions, statements, and resources as we continue to press for the full deployment of our sector.

ADBA Calls on Government to Back Home-Grown Biomethane
On 16 March, ADBA wrote to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, and DESNZ ministers urging immediate action to boost the UK’s biomethane production in light of the escalating energy crisis. In the letter, ADBA Chair Chris Huhne calls for the removal of regulatory barriers that are limiting growth. Unlocking this potential would increase UK biomethane output by a third – enough to replace the volume of gas imported from Qatar in 2024 – and strengthen the country’s resilience against global supply shocks.
ADBA Issues Briefings to MPs
ADBA has produced two concise briefings for MPs outlining how the AD and biogas sector can help address the current crisis.
One focuses on the looming food supply challenge caused by the high cost of synthetic fertilisers and the role of biofertilisers from AD. The second sets out how easing restrictions on biomethane production could strengthen the UK’s energy security. Originally shared across Westminster, these briefings also offer valuable insight for the wider sector.
Podcast – Chris Huhne on Energy Security
AD
BA Chair Chris Huhne recently joined gasworld’s 1895 Podcast to discuss the global energy tensions reshaping Europe’s energy security, the rising importance of renewable gas, and why biomethane and AD are increasingly viewed as strategic assets.
Reflecting on ADBA’s Policy position
ADBA has submitted a response to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Gas System in Transition consultation, reiterating the Association’s long-standing position on the UK’s structural exposure to global gas market volatility. This response reinforces the critical role of domestic biomethane, strategic gas storage, and regulatory modernisation in strengthening national energy resilience.

Opinion – Biogas and the Middle East Crisis
With farmers facing rising fuel and fertiliser costs linked to the crisis in the Middle East, energy and food security have become urgent national priorities. In this opinion piece, ADBA’s Editor‑in‑Chief Jon Hughes explores how current geopolitical pressures threaten UK food supply—and why biogas and biofertilisers are increasingly vital to keeping food affordable.Press Releases
