MEMBER’S PRESS RELEASE: Newly published AD research
New research out this month supports previous findings into the benefits of using Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) technology to treat high strength organic wastewater from the malt ingredient manufacturing industry. The latest paper from Fontus Environmental demonstrates the robust nature of this process is also apparent under start up conditions.
Previously published scientific research (Cairns & Mead, 2017) indicated how UASBs offer a robust treatment option even when pushed to their limits. Following on from this, North Yorkshire based consultants and maintainers Fontus Environmental have demonstrated that this resilience is also apparent during the start up.
Ryland Cairns, Director of Fontus Environmental, explains:
The use of AD, particularly Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket technology, has been successfully applied across many industries to treat high strength organic wastewaters and has been backed up with many scientific papers to demonstrate performance, however there was none relating to the start up of UASBs in the malted ingredients sector. We are passionate not only with the pursuit of knowledge but also with the sharing of this knowledge in attempt to enhance operations of the wider AD community and is why we make a conscious decision to publish in open access journals. The knowledge from this latest paper could be beneficial to others in the malt industry or industries that run seasonally and require periodic start-ups.
The paper entitled Start up of a UASB treating malted ingredient manufacturing wastewater is published in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development Volume 7 number 2 and can be accessed for free at https://doi.org/10.5296/emsd.v7i2.12411. It also acknowledges ADBA for encouraging further developments within the AD industry as well as the recent set up of the AD Certification Scheme.
