Welsh Power choose Edina UK for 10 MWe STOR Project

UK AD BIOGAS 2014 NEWS

Following a competitive tender process, Edina was awarded the contract to supply 10 MWe back-up power generation or demand reduction as required for Welsh Power. Short-term Operating Reserve (STOR) is the term used by the National Grid to describe periods when additional power is needed due to unforeseen levels of demand or unavailability of usual supply. The minimum essential criteria is that this source of power can be quickly operational (within two hours in theory but often 20 minutes is stipulated), there is a minimum output of 3 MWe, availability at least three times per week and a recovery time not exceeding 20 hours.

Edina proposed the TCG2020V20 from MWM which will be fuelled by natural gas. This engine has a superlative record around the world for efficiency, robustness and longevity. Edina is the only company in the UK to containerise this size of engine and prepares them in its Lisburn premises for ease of installation, a more straightforward supply chain and reduction in construction waste. This was considered beneficial in addition to economic factors during the decision making process.

The TCG2020V20 has an output of 2.56 MWe and an overall efficiency in excess of 87%. This power generating model is just as successful fuelled by biogas with the 2020 series being installed on numerous waste to energy plants, for example with Anglian Water and Shanks. Monitoring shows a consistent performance in excess of 90% with many sites now operational for 15 years.

Group Director, Tony Fenton, said:

The testing and research that goes into the production of the range is comprehensive. We have recently installed additional testing equipment at our factory which gives our commissioning team a head-start on site.

Edina was delighted to receive the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (Innovation) earlier this year for its work in providing the biogas sector with its power generation products.
