AD course at Jyväskylä Summer School, Finland

Are you interested in gaining a greater technical knowledge of the anaerobic digestion process? Then perhaps you should apply to attend the 23rd Jyväskylä Summer School at University of Jyväskylä in August this year.

The summer school, which is free to attend – though students must pay their own expenses (travel,accomodation, subsistence etc) – is not specific to anaerobic digestion and is this year offering 24 courses in the following subjects: biology and environmental sciences, chemistry, computing, education, information systems and cognitive science, mathematics, physics, renewable energy, statistics, for advanced Master’s students, PhD students, and post-docs in various fields of science and information technology.

The AD specific course called Biogas Technology for Renewable Energy Production and Environmental Benefit will be led by Dr Prasad Kaparaju, with lectures from:

  • Professor Charles Banks, University of Southampton
  • Dr Yue Zhang, University of Southampton
  • Dr Michael Chesshire, Evergreen Gas
  • Dr Cristina Cavinato, Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia
  • Dr Reinhold Waltenberger, BDI – BioEnergy International AG

Taught in English and running from 12 to 16 August the course will cover the fundamental principles of AD technology, recent developments in its use for sustainable renewable energy production, anaerobic microbiology, biochemistry and reactor design, application of biogas technology in municipal and industrial waste management, and in industrial-scale energy production from agro-wastes and crops.

The concept of biogas production from food waste as second generation biofuel source, including collection, pre-treatment and process optimisation, will be discussed taking to consideration its energy and mass balance, and carbon footprint for sustainability criteria.

The different potential uses of the produced biogas and the digestate are also discussed, including environmental impacts and benefits on greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient recycling.
