Site 1: Tully Biogas Plant
ADBA Biogas Plant of the year 2026 winners!
Developed and operated by Stream BioEnergy, the Tully Biogas Plant in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, is a globally unique anaerobic digestion (AD) facility that processes 50,000 tonnes per annum of locally sourced poultry litter as a single feedstock.
The plant was purpose-built to address Northern Ireland’s nutrient surplus crisis, which has contributed to ecosystem degradation and water quality decline, such as the well-known ecological catastrophe at Lough Neagh. The plant generates 3MW of renewable electricity and exports enough power for 4,000 homes. Since commissioning, it has removed around 3,000 tonnes of phosphorus from surplus soils, reduced ammonia emissions by approximately 90% compared to untreated poultry litter land spreading, and delivers around 10,000 tonnes of CO₂eq savings each year. Recovered nutrients are refined into a concentrated biofertiliser used in horticulture, displacing peat in compost production. Widely recognised as a benchmark mono-digestion facility, the plant has welcomed international developers and policymakers seeking to replicate its scalable circular economy model.
