ADBA Hosts Its Northern Ireland Conference
ADBA Northern Ireland Conference: Paving the Way for a Greener Future
We recently hosted our annual Northern Ireland Conference on 4 September 2024 at the ICC Belfast. This event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss the future of biogas and its role in achieving a sustainable, low-carbon economy in Northern Ireland. As organisers, we’re pleased to share some key takeaways from this enlightening event.
Pre-Conference Site Visit
On 3 September 2024, we had the privilege of organising a site visit to Granville Eco Park, showcasing their first gas-to-grid injection project. This visit provided attendees with valuable insights into the practical applications of biomethane technology and set the stage for the discussions that followed at the conference.
The Current State of Biomethane
Our conference kicked off with our chair Chris Huhne and CEO Charlotte Morton’s remarks followed by our policy lead Dr Gareth Mottram highlighting the growing biomethane capacity and the challenges faced by our industry. With hundreds of AD plants across Europe and more planned for the coming year, it’s clear that biomethane is gaining traction as a renewable energy source, with Northern Ireland playing an increasingly important role.
Challenges and Solutions
Several of our speakers addressed the main challenges facing the biogas and especially biomethane industry in Northern Ireland. These include feedstock management, ensuring consistent and appropriate feedstock for efficient AD plant operation. The vast amount of digestate produced is another significant concern, with limited markets for this co-product. This restriction is because nutrient management, particularly excess phosphorus, poses environmental challenges in Northern Ireland that need addressing, especially sensitive are areas like Lough Neagh. Throughout the conference, the need for long-term, stable pricing or equivalent consistent supportive policies was emphasised.
Solutions proposed by our experts included better plant design, improved education and training, and the development of markets for digestate as a renewable fertiliser. The AD Certification Scheme tackles industry challenges, driving improvements in plant design, boosting operational skills, and enhancing digestate quality to expand its market potential as a renewable fertiliser.
Government Strategies and Support
We were honoured to have Andrew Muir, DAERA Minister, outline the Northern Ireland government’s strategy built on three pillars: climate action, environmental improvements and green jobs. The focus on indigenous biomethane production was highlighted as a key component in addressing both energy and environmental concerns specific to Northern Ireland.
The Role of Regulation and Infrastructure
Representatives from utility regulators and gas networks discussed the importance of updating regulations and infrastructure to accommodate biomethane in Northern Ireland. The potential for biomethane to power entire towns, as demonstrated by the Granville Eco Park project we visited, showcases the technology’s promise for the region.
Looking to the Future
Our conference also touched on future developments for Northern Ireland. Discussions included the potential integration of biomethane with hydrogen networks and the need for clear, simplified language when communicating about energy transition. Our speakers emphasised the importance of community engagement and demonstrating local benefits in the Northern Irish context.
As ADBA, we’re excited about the future of biogas in Northern Ireland. As we move towards a greener future, it’s clear that biogas has a significant role to play in decarbonising Northern Ireland’s energy systems and supporting sustainable agriculture. With continued innovation, supportive policies, and collaboration across sectors, we believe the biogas industry in Northern Ireland is destined for growth and impact in the years to come.
The future looks green, and it’s powered by AD!
