News Story: Bennamann unveils modular bio-CNG refuelling station at World Biogas Expo 2025
A pioneer in sustainable technology, Bennamann chose the World Biogas Expo 2025 to launch onto the global market its latest breakthrough in biogas upgrading.
The CAPCH4™ Biogas Upgrader marks a significant step forward for transport decarbonisation. Designed to retrofit into existing anaerobic digestion (AD) plants, the CAPCH4™ unit transforms raw biogas into fuel-grade biomethane (Bio-CNG). It is an all encompassing end-to-end process of filtration-upgrading- compression- storage-refuelling.
The modular unit supports the emergence of so-called “AD farm forecourts” — decentralised refuelling hubs and providing CNG fuel in remote areas, capable of powering tractors, generators and vehicle fleets, with clean, renewable gas.
For early adopters of AD in receipt of feed-in-tariff, ROCs and other schemes, it represents a viable solution to extend the life and profitability of plant assets though RTFOs and RTFCs as current support mechanisms conclude.
The innovation comes as business face growing pressure to reduce emissions from transport to satisfy Scope 1 and 3 supply chain mandates and opens the opportunity for carbon in-setting from vehicle fleets to those who currently can’t access CNG fuels due to the lack of refuelling stations.
“Farmers, fleet managers, waste hauliers and kerbside collectors are increasingly under scrutiny to transition to cleaner fuels,” said a Bennamann spokesperson. “The CAPCH4™ upgrader can help them meet climate obligations whilst also securing energy independence and revenue potential.”
The CAPCH4™ upgrader provides the opportunity for AD plant operators to transition to Bio-CNG road fuel, both for self-consumption and retail sales. Each device produces 140,000kg of biomethane road fuel per annum, which as an example, is enough for 4 – 6 HGV units covering 100,000km, or 4 – 6 New Holland T6.180 CNG tractors at 1,500hrs per annum.
Flexible modular storage at 250 bar means Bio-CNG can be exported off site with ease for off-grid power applications, such as construction sites and a bio-CNG powered EV charging unit is coming soon.
Though farmers in the UK are not yet directly affected by red diesel restrictions, it is a fear of many that this could change in the future which is accelerating the transition to low-carbon alternatives. Industry experts are urging the sector to explore alternatives like biomethane now — to future-proof operations before policy and market signals harden.
Bennamann’s latest offering may well represent the beginning of that shift.
