Clarifying the Role of Biomethane in the GHG Protocol – Join Our Advocacy Effort
The Anaerobic Digestions and Bioresources Assocaition (ADBA), in collaboration with industry partners, has been actively engaging with the World Resources Institute (WRI), the body that administers the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, to advocate for the recognition of market-based mechanisms for biomethane. This work is critical in ensuring that renewable gases receive the recognition they deserve in global decarbonisation efforts.
Why This Matters
The GHG Protocol is the world’s most widely used standard for measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions. Its rules directly influence how companies report their climate impact. However, current standards fail to fully account for the role of Environmental Attributes Certificates (EACs) for renewable fuels like biomethane.
Without this recognition, businesses using biomethane cannot accurately reflect their decarbonisation efforts in emissions inventories, limiting investment in renewable gases and slowing down progress toward net zero goals.
A Call for Change – Co-Sign the Joint Letter
To address this, ADBA is joining forces with the World Biogas Association (WBA), the European Biogas Association (EBA), Eurogas, and the Renewable Natural Gas Coalition (RNG Coalition) to coordinate a joint letter urging the GHG Protocol to:
- Adopt a Market-Based Approach – Recognise renewable gases in Scope 1 emissions inventories for both fuel and feedstock applications. This would align with the Protocol’s existing dual-reporting structure, which includes both location-based and market-based approaches.
- Issue an Interim Statement by Mid-2025 – Provide clarity for industry stakeholders by confirming that robust market instruments will be recognised in GHG inventories, even as final standards are being developed. This certainty is essential for companies making long-term decarbonisation investments.

Webinar: The Role of Biomethane in the GHG Protocol
The ongoing revision of the GHG Protocol provides a unique opportunity to clarify the role of biomethane certificates and ensure they are appropriately recognised within the emissions accounting framework.
Join WBA, EBA, Eurogas, ERGaR, and the RNG Coalition for a webinar exploring the implications of these changes, featuring perspectives from:
- Producers, traders, and off-takers on the accounting of biomethane certificates
- S&P Global Commodity Insights, presenting their latest report on renewable gas tracking systems and the value of biomethane/RNG certificates
Date: 10 February
Time: 16:00–17:30 CET
Help Us Make Green Gas Count
This is a pivotal moment for the biogas and biomethane industry. By working together, we can ensure renewable gases play a full role in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
