WBA Site visit: Netherlands 6-8 September 2017

WBA Site visit: Netherlands 6-8 September 2017

The purpose of the programme is to give participants an in-depth vision of how biogas and anaerobic digestion plants function within the
context of treating urban, animal and sewage biodegradable waste streams in The Netherlands. In The Netherlands there are currently 252 functioning digesters with 219MW installed electrical capacity and 11,905 Nm3/hr biomethane upgrading capacity (IEA Bioenergy, 2016). The Ministry of Economic Affairs (RVO) has made information on all the installations available online. http://arcg.is/2sJyTgu. There are 25 biogas upgrading plants feeding biomethane into the gas grid or using it as vehicle fuel. The most common technology used for upgrading biogas to biomethane is membrane separation. Unlike many other countries, the percentage of energy in biogas utilised as heat is 56% while that as electricity is 33%. 8% of the energy is used as vehicle fuel which is amongst the highest in the world. Many The Netherlands 6-8th September 2017 of these plants are associated with Groen Gas Netherlands, an industry body, with whom this programme is organised. The tour will visit several plants and allow time both for understanding the technologies used, as well as dicussing with plant operators and senior government officials, the economic, legislative and social barriers within which they are working. This tour is an essential element in helping you understand both cutting-edge and more traditional technologies in the biogas sector and to exchange experiences both with operators and other participants on the tour. Among the sites we have included several options of feedstock material, application and size. The tour is led by Freek Van Ejik, Advisory Board member of WBA and Dutch waste management expert, owner of consultancy Acceleratio B.V., who will guide you through the two days (Freek speaks Dutch, English and Italian).
