Market Update: Potential revenue impact of biofuels mandate

Authors: Dr Gareth Mottram and Jon Hughes

The global market for biofuels is set for a major shake-up, and the ripple effect could impact the value of UK biomethane certificates.

The US is set to increase its biofuel blend mandates and introduce protectionist measures to favour domestic production, massively disadvantaging imported fuels and feedstocks.  The consequences will be far reaching for where biofuels are made and consumed, impacting US trade for feedstocks and biofuels with the EU, Brazil and Canada and redrawing current supply chains.   The impact on UK certificate prices will depend on the fallout and whether cheaper renewable biofuels flood the market – making it easier for companies to achieve their renewable fuels targets – or rise in price due to straightened supply.
