Biomethane for Transport Decarbonisation: Opportunities for Local Authority Fleets

As the UK moves towards its net zero emissions target, decarbonising the transport sector is a major priority. A vast majority of local authorities in the UK have declared climate and/or ecological emergency. Their scope 1 emissions are primarily from the heating of buildings, waste collection and maintenance fleets. With mandatory separate collection of food waste coming into force, these local authorities who are already looking into upgrading their existing diesel-run fleet to reduce emissions, are expecting to buy new ones for separate food waste collection. They will also be looking into ways of processing/disposing of the collected organic waste.

This collectively presents a fantastic opportunity for the anaerobic digestion (AD) industry – via additional digestion capacity and low-emission waste collection vehicles needed. There is an opportunity here for the local authorities to meet their regulatory as well as climate obligations. The AD industry is at the heart of this opportunity, with its potential to convert organic waste into renewable biomethane that can be used as a transport fuel.

In this webinar, experts will discuss biomethane production capacity, distribution infrastructure readiness, real-world case studies, vehicle manufacturer perspectives, and local authority feasibility considerations for transitioning to biomethane-powered waste collection vehicles.

The webinar will examine how AD and biomethane can enable low-carbon heavy transport in the UK while delivering co-benefits across waste management and other sectors. Speakers will address questions around scaling up AD infrastructure to power municipal waste fleets, challenges and solutions for local authorities looking to adopt this approach, and the broader role of biomethane in sustainable transport.

PRESENTATIONS

Save the date: ADBA will be hosting a free Local Authorities Lunch on Wednesday, 10 July from 13:00 until 14:30 BST at the World Biogas Expo, NEC Birmingham, United Kingdom. The lunch will bring together local councils, investors, anaerobic digestion plant operators and stakeholders. As England’s Councils gear up to implement separate food waste collections, the Lunch will provide an opportunity to learn about how to implement them. A spokesman from Defra is expected to speak. A behaviour change expert who has mobilised a community to demand an AD solution will also be speaking. To find out more and register, visit World Biogas Expo/Local Authorities Lunch

Note: Registration data will be shared with the organisers of Decarbonising Transport Week 2024, Binary Carbon Ltd, to enable notification of other events taking place during that week. If you would like hear about more of Binary Carbon Ltd’s future events, then tick the box in the form below.
