Key to clean energy is government's own commitments – Redesdale

ADBA PRESS RELEASE

As the UK government hosts the Clean Energy Ministerial Event in London, ‘Environmental Parliamentarian of the Year’ Lord Redesdale has said that the UK can become a world leader in renewable energy – but only if the government does more to deliver its own commitments.

Lord Redesdale, a Liberal Democrat peer, was recognised for his commitment to the environment and clean energy by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management in November. He is also chair of the Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association.

Lord Redesdale said:

The coalition set out with an ambitious goal to be the ‘greenest government ever’, and while there have been some positive developments, progress towards renewable energy goals remains painfully slow.

The government needs to do more to deliver on its own commitments – not least the promise to deliver a ‘huge increase’ in energy from waste through anaerobic digestion. We need a strategy which bridges policy on energy and resource use, to ensure we make the most of both.

With the right policies biogas could deliver 10% of the UK’s domestic gas demand, be worth £2-3bn to the UK economy, and support 35,000 jobs. This green growth is vital to drag Britain back out recession.

As ministers from around the world meet in London, we should also recognise the huge export markets which we will open for British business by becoming world leaders in anaerobic digestion for waste – and renewable energy more generally.
