MEMBER’S PRESS RELEASE: New research on AD in the malt industry

New research out this month demonstrates the benefits of using Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) technology to treat high-strength organic wastewater from the malt ingredient manufacturing industry.

Following their win at the ADBA Industry Awards in 2016, Suffolk-based malt and malt ingredient manufacturer Muntons has practically demonstrated how anaerobic digestion (AD) can be successfully applied to the treatment of effluent from the malt ingredient manufacturing process. They have now backed this up scientifically with the publication of a new research article indicating how UASBs offer a robust treatment option even when pushed to their limits.

Ryland Cairns, Environment Manager for Muntons, explains:

The use of AD, particularly Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket technology, has been successfully applied across many industries to treat high-strength organic wastewasters and has been backed up with many scientific papers demonstrating performance. There was, however, none relating to the malt ingredients sector. Considering the success of the plant we felt as though we should be sharing our experience to help others.

The paper, entitled 'Performance of a UASB effluent treatment plant treating malt ingredient manufacturing wastewater', is published in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development, Volume 6 number 2: https://doi.org/10.5296/emsd.v6i2.11314.
