AD placed at the Heart of Grangemouth Green Transition

Just days out from the ADBA Scottish Conference 2025 on 26 March, proposals to transform Grangemouth oil refinery into a beacon of the green transition have been published.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) features as one of the nine recommended options that could form an industrial cluster featuring multiple waste to energy technologies.

The future of Grangemouth is seen as a litmus test for how the Scottish Government is to deliver a Just Transition, and position itself as a leader in low carbon energy production.

The feasibility report from Ernst & Young uses AD to exemplify the benefits of pursuing an industrial cluster solution.

“Across the project portfolio there are significant opportunities to unlock technologies at scale, utilising the product and by-products to build out value chains. Examples of these potential synergies include utilising the biogenic CO2 from anaerobic digestion to create e-fuels.”

The plan – which is backed by £200 million from the UK government and £25 million from the Scottish Government – will support jobs, unlock investment and drive growth.
